Ignore fractures of the ulnar styloid in distal radius fractures

چکیده

Introduction Fractures of the ulnar styloid frequently accompany fractures of the distal radius, however, there is no conclusive evidence whether it influences the final outcome of the treatment. The majority of studies show no negative effect of ulnar styloid fractures on final outcome, when the fracture of the distal radius is fixed, preferably by a locking plate [1,2]. Some authors, however, report on frequent non-unions of the ulnar styloid, distal radio-ulnar joint (DRUJ) instabilities, triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) tears, and other complications which may cause ulnar wrist pain, reduced mobility and power of the hand [3,4]. No studies are available that address this issue for K-wire fixation of the distal radius fractures.

Factors predicting late collapse of distal radius fractures.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND Although fractures of the distal radius are a common clinical presentation, many factors affect instability of these injuries. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of age, sex, distal radial ulnar joint injury (DRUJ), ulnar styloid fracture, and dorsal displacement in late collapse of distal radius fractures. METHODS Three hundred twenty-nine patient fractu...

Fracture of the ulnar styloid process negatively influences the outcome of paediatric fractures of the distal radius.

In paediatric patients with fractures of the distal radius, the consequences of associated ulnar styloid fractures are often underestimated. These may include persisting pain or functional deficits. The aim of the present study was to report the outcome of these fractures using a modified DASH-Score. All children with distal radius fractures treated in a two years period were analysed; only pat...

The Effect of Fracture of Ulnar Styloid on Rotational Movements of the Forearm after Extraarticular Fractures of Distal Radius

Introduction: Since distal radius fractures are among the most common fractures encountered in orthopedics and one of their common complications is restriction of rotational movements of the wrist and forearm, identification of factors affecting this loss of motion is of importance. This study was conducted to evaluate the relation between extraarticular distal radius fractures associated with ...

Functional outcomes of distal radius fractures with and without ulnar styloid fractures: a meta-analysis

The aim of this meta-analysis was to compare the functional outcomes of patients with a distal radius fracture with and without a concomitant fracture of the ulnar styloid process. A systematic literature search was performed to identify all studies comparing patients with a distal radius fracture with and without an ulnar styloid process fracture. The initial search revealed 511 articles, of w...

Commentary on Kramer et al. The incidence of ulnocarpal complaints after distal radial fracture in relation to the fracture of the ulnar styloid.

Two hundred distal radial fractures, with a mean follow up of 20 months (range 6-49), were divided into three groups according to the presence and healing status of an ulnar styloid fracture. The patients underwent both clinical and radiological examination and completed two different questionnaires. One hundred and one, of 200 distal radial fractures, were associated with an ulnar styloid frac...
